Ecopreneur programme. cewas Middle East and Palestine Polytechnic University are offering an 18-months incubation support for innovators and entrepreneurs with business ideas that create environmental, economic and social impact in Palestine. The programme includes a pre-incubation ideation stage, training modules during incubation, business and operational coaching, consulting by sector experts and access to an extensive regional and international network of professionals and experts, seed funding and logistic support beyond incubation.

Selection criteria for the Pre-Incubation Phase

  • Age: between 18-35
  • Residing in the West Bank and can access PPU campus
  • Interest to engage towards environmental sustainability
  • Creative and out-of-the box thinking
  • Available to participate in a 3 days training in June/July 2020

Selection criteria for the Incubation Phase

  • All applicants must be between 18-35.
  • Applicants must be residing in the West Bank and can access the university campus ( Center of Excellence and continuing education, Jabal Abo Romman, Hebron) easily from where they reside.
  • Interest to engage towards environmental sustainability must be clearly outlined
  • Clear and well written problem/challenge statement.
  • Clear and well written & innovative solution that will contribute substantially to solving water, sanitation or waste management challenges in Palestine with particular consideration given to solutions coming from and impacting vulnerable groups including refugees, women and youth.
  • Solutions that address the environmental impacts of the COVID-19 crisis are encouraged.
  • Good command of English is an advantage, but not mandatory (training held in Arabic and English).
  • Applicants are physically available to participate in all activities of the programme 2020-2021 (the majority of them taking place in Hebron at PPU)

PPU Business Incubator

Palestine Polytechnic University is leading the effort to create the first university business incubator in Palestine since 2007. to foster entrepreneurship, and enhance learning, internships, and job creation for 7000 potential entrepreneurs and serve start-up businesses in a facility of approximately 700 square meters.

PPU Business Incubator facility is operated by the ‘Centre of Excellence and Continuing Education’, that was launched at the beginning of the year 2007 as a technology based physical incubator facility, now moved to be a mixed use incubator meaning that offers business services to Palestinian entrepreneurs who have mature concepts for unique and innovative projects in various fields . Aiming to develop Palestinian Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs), as well as tackle growth model sectors in order to generate new jobs, attract foreign investment and improve the economic situation in Palestine. It offers startups: business mentoring, seed funding, office space, infrastructure and internet and is operated by a dedicated manager. Dozens of empowerment programs and thousands of training hours, mentoring and coaching have been carried out through a network of certified trainers and private sector. as well as incubation and acceleration programs and access to capitalization and financing to launch marketable businesses. Where more than 180 startups obtained pre-incubation services as well as 88 startups that were officially launched in the market, from various economic sectors with a success rate exceeding 60% of total, which provided more than 160 jobs, 68% Of them female employees. PPU Business Incubators have carried out many initiatives that support the local community in partnership with local universities, local and international non-profit organizations.

 

cewas Middle East

cewas is a Swiss non-profit organisation offering business incubation services for startups in the water, sanitation and resource management by building and strengthening capacities of innovations and entrepreneurs that aim to solve the world’s most pressing water, sanitation and resource challenges.

In the Middle East, cewas has been established to foster innovation and sustainability of environmental sectors through the development and implementation of entrepreneurial approaches.

Since 2016, cewas Middle East has been offering long-term entrepreneurship support programmes, including technical & business-related training, coaching and mentoring, networking support and - on a smaller scale – financial assistance to more than 80 start-ups.

cewas Middle East currently operates in Jordan, Lebanon, Palestine and Iraq. All regional and country programmes are firmly embedded within the local ecosystems to ensure coherence with national development goals and a strong focus on creating high-potential bottom-up solutions to social and ecological challenges that truly affect people’s life and environmental sustainability.

cewas’ start-ups focus on creating impact, while seeking financial viability, which is what is direly needed to ensure everyone’s access to natural resources, safe and efficient services as well as protection of natural ecosystems. In order to succeed in their mission and become sustainable entities at the same time, the start-ups require an innovative blend of support mechanisms that cewas Middle East attempts to consolidate with its business, finance and technical partners in the region.

  • Ideation Workshop

    The ideation workshop introduces up to 25 selected participants to the current water and environmental challenges and equips you with tools to ideate solutions that create significant economic, environmental and social impact. Moreover, you will develop hypotheses, prototype solutions, test your prototypes and learn pitching skills. Participants of the ideation workshop can apply to the incubation phase with their developed workshop ideas/output.

The 15 selected start-up teams will receive specialized technical and business development support provided by cewas Middle East and the Palestine Polytechnic University Business Incubator during the incubation phase. The pre-incubation phase will help interested people develop ideas that are eligible for the programme. However, they will have to apply to the programme after the ideation workshop. Participation is open for the info session and only possible by invitation for all other activities.

  • Module 1: Idea Validation and Business Model Development

    Objective: Define your winning water, sanitation or waste business model.

    This module introduces you thoroughly to the water and environmental challenges, and the market needs. Based on this, you will systematically start developing your business model, where you will get your business idea, analyze your customer segment and identify value propositions. Moreover, you will learn team development skills and start to get tailored support to develop your innovative business strategy.

  • Module 2: Market Research, Testing and Sales

    Objective: Ground-truth your business model and test it on your customers.

    During this module, you will revisit your business model and develop and test its different elements, including prototyping. You will analyze specific market segments and generate feedback that allows you to turn your water, sanitation or waste idea into a feasible solution. You will learn how to attract customers, improve your product or services and make your first sales experiences.

  • Module 3: Marketing and Finance

    Objective: Build a compelling story around your products or services and make the numbers work

    Drawing on information gathered in Module 1 and 2, you will establish a viable marketing mix considering promotion, placement and pricing of your green products and services. In parallel, you will dive deep into cost structures and revenue streams to turn your idea into a financially viable solution.You will count with the key elements of a convincing business plan by the end of this module. At the end of this module, you will learn how to pitch your business to externals

  • Pitching Workshop

    Objective: Perfect the business pitch

    You have a great idea and now it is time to test it with external experts, investors and potential customers. During this one-day activity, you will get individual coaching to further develop your business model and you will learn how to pitch your business to investors.

  • Seed-funding Green Innovation Award and Networking Event

    You will recognise the achievements you have accomplished for your business. You will be able to demonstrate the positive impact your project can have on those most vulnerable to Palestine’s water, sanitation and resource challenges. And you will have a chance to win seed funding support to take your business to the next level, network and set the bar for environmental innovations in Palestine.

  • Continuous Coaching

    Expert coaches and mentors are there to help make things happen! In individual coaching sessions, they deliver practical advice, introductions and connections to funding opportunities. Meanwhile, through events with your cewas Middle East community, you will connect to a broad range of sector experts and like-minded green entrepreneurs to collaborate, exchange and develop businesses with.
